No matter how passionate you are about writing or how long you’ve been writing, some days the process will make you want to pull your hair off.

On such days, no amount of coffee, music, or Pomodoro timers helps. That’s where gamification techniques can save you.

Gamification refers to the application of game-like elements such as leaderboard boards, badges, progress charts, competition, and rewards to non-game contexts.

Gamification in writing

Applied to writing, gamification can make the writing process engaging, rewarding, and more streamlined. It leverages a number of psychological mechanisms such as operant conditioning, self-determination theory, and the flow state to boost productivity and motivation.

For instance, positive reinforcement in the form of virtual rewards, such as experience points (XP) or badges, activates the brain’s reward pathways, making the writing process more enjoyable and reinforcing the desired writing habits.
